I have so enjoyed looking at all your beautiful photos, Star. They are candy for my tired eyes. Everything here is brown and no flowers are blooming, so the vivid colored flowers and warm water are like a banquet to look at. I can't get over how beautifully blue the water is! What an awesome God, Who created it all! I hope you had a wonderful and blessed Christmas, my friend. May 2009 bring you everything you desire. Blessings to you, my precious Star. Thank you Star...it feels good to accomplish so much in a day including being able to keep my home picked up and neat. It has been years since I had the energy or clarity to even do that. I still cannot do heavy housework. I have to wait for the homemaker to do that. I can do my dishes, wipe down the counters, keep things generally picked up, and still have energy to do the crafting.
You are right though...I do need to allow myself some time to just rest. I don't want to over extend myself. I think I can do the angel this afternoon and then just watch a movie tonight. Thanks for pointing it out. We all need gentle reminders sometimes.
Yes, I have was always one to look everything up, scientific name and all. I think as we get older our attention can get pulled into the more vital things of life and we tend to neglect the little things that bring us joy and are an essential part of who each person is. Not everyone likes to have all that information and details so I see that as being a specific part of a personality to desire those things.
For people like us that is part of taking time to smell the roses.
I plan on getting the pictures as soon as I finish the angel.
Blessings and Peace, Alesia

I do get that. I don't have a vehicle myself. I take my photos of what I can find on walks. I have always been one to look at details. I pay attention to what is on the ground at my feet, in the trees, the clouds in the sky. I like to pay attention and find treasures that others wouldn't normally see.
These are beautiful flower pictures. I am only familiar with the first two. The others all look like species that don't grow around here. Very beautiful and intriguing. I will enjoy seeing more. Do you know the names of them?
Thank you. I am glad to have finished the bag and D's slippers. The last few years I have handmade my gifts. I started doing this because of finances. No money to purchase and I have found that people do appreciate it. Hmmm, now that I think about it I was doing handmade gifts for more then years then that. I didn't use to do everyone's gift handmade. I would do a special gift every year.
There was a time though when I was making large, quilted, Christmas stockings for my many family members for Christmas. I am not sure how many of those I actually did! A half dozen or so every season for 3 or 4 years. Everyone loved them.
Those up here that I spend part of Christmas with switched over to cheap Dollar Tree stockings a few years ago because C got married and her daughter and husband don't have one and also my didn't come when I left my ex.
I have been wanting to make new ones for years. My mother use to ask me about making new ones. I didn't remember how to sew so it wasn't an option. I have been thinking this past week that maybe I will make them for next Christmas. I would need 7 for next year.
I don't have the pattern anymore however the way my mind is working now I believe I could design my own. I could do those things when I was teenager. I believe I could now. Since I plan to teach myself how to make real quilts maybe I could do the stockings with quilting blocks. That would be interesting. I have lots to think about.
I plan to take pictures of the finished products today.
Blessings and Peace, Alesia

My mother and 3 aunts haven't gotten the check with the gynecologist on their breasts and womb for a long time. I am kind of worry about them. I need to find a good one who is gentle and have a sense how we women feel on this situation. Actually for me it doesn't matter if it is she or he. Sometimes even women doctors can be a less common sense. I don't know why ? [masako]

Yes, I guess I am persistent. Some might say stubborn. It works for me. I remember climbing a mountain back in "94". I was only a few months out of major surgery. My lungs had been damaged by the experience. I had been long distance swimming all summer yet was still having a challenge doing activities out of water.
I wanted to climb this mountain though. I was determined. We weren't using a trail, just straight up the mountain through the trees, following a river.
We came to this stand of pines on a steep slope. I couldn't breathe. The woman I was with thought we should turn back. I was absolutely determined I would make it to the top. I knew I was at least 3/4's of the way there. She kept saying, "You have to stop. You can't go on."
I just kept putting one foot in front of the other and I finally made it. It was one of those pivotal moments in life. We all get them at some point in life. That was the moment I decided I was going live. I wasn't sure before that. I hadn't wanted to be alive for years. That day though I a choice when I was told to turn back. It wasn't just a choice to climb. It was a choice to live. I finished climbing the physical mountain that day. I began the climb on that intangible mountain inside me. I feel like I am coming out of that stand of pines on my non-physical mountain now.
I am glad that the idea of putting the things you want to create where you can see them was helpful. I find more and more that it is simple things that are helpful. I agree that putting work items out though would create more stress. We need to take breaks from the work things and enjoy our creativity in ways that work for us.
Those jeans I wrote about this morning are still on the shelf in my closet however they are very visual in my mind. I think once I finish up this handbag I will cut the pattern out for a jean bag.
I will post things as I finish them. I will be interested in seeing your creations too.
Blessings and Peace, Alesia

What a pleasure to teach your students that way! I really do believe the teacher can make all the difference. Teachers who make learning fun and create new experiences for their students make real differences in their lives. I am sure those boys will always remember that you did that for them. The physical sciences are so much fun!
A few years back I took a 15-year-old girl under my wing. I had known her for many years. She was very standoffish and shy. She was actually scared of me which was a very new thing for me. I have always attracted children to me.
It was the beginning of the school year. She had been assigned a paper on one the US presidents. I happened to pop in that day. She was struggling with using the internet to find the information. Her older sister and mother were both too busy to help her so I offered.
She let me and realized that maybe I wasn't as scary as she thought. She told me she had been given a science project to collect 50 insects and bugs and classify them. She said she didn't know how she was going to find 50 different ones in the city.
I offered to take her home with me. I lived in the country. I told her I would assist her in completing assignment. She came. The next day I took her walking in the woods. I didn't just help her to find bugs and insects though I shared with her what I knew of the flora and fauna of the area. I pointed out birds to her I was actually able to imitate bird song that day and had them answering me. (I had never done it before and I have never been able to do it since.)
We found late season blueberries. None of these were things she had ever done and most was things she had never seen.
We were out for several hours when she said, "I didn't know science could be fun! I never had a teacher who made it fun or interesting."
That was the beginning. She spent all her weekends and many of her vacations with me after that. I helped her get through high school. She is 24 now and in college maintaining a 3.8 average. This is a girl that is was wondered if she would even get through high school. No one had taken the time to make learning fun for her. No one had ever sat down and listened to her. I saw it change her life because I was willing to give her my time, listen, and make education interesting and fun.
I truly believe that it is teachers like you that make all the difference.
Blessings and Peace, Alesia

Hello Again Star,
These pictures really are appealing. I bet it would feel really good to slip my body into those tropical waters. I suspect living in a place like that would ease the muscle ache. I can almost smell the salt water as the last picture of the natural aquarium catches my eye.
I stopped being child at around 7 years old. I don't really remember that bliss. It is a natural part of who I am to be a giver. One of the greatest challenges for me has been to learn that I can't always be the giver to others and have to give to myself at times.
Our Christmas stockings have become the best part of Christmas in the past few years. C's daughter, D, goes with her father on Christmas afternoon. C's husband, J, always takes a nap so it is just us women. The past couple of years it has been C, B, mother, and I.
We have got these huge stockings. We get little things at the Dollar Tree near here. Everything is a dollar or less. They have tons of stuff, home decor, personal care products, small electronics, toys, household supplies, knick knacks, and even groceries. There is usually so much when each person adds to fill the others stockings that we actually end up with a grocery bag in addition to each stocking.
We spend at least an hour just slowly opening up one small package after another. We laugh and joke and generally just have a good time. It is that more then what is in the stockings that makes it so fun.
Last year I couldn't sit at all so Christmas took place in my bedroom. There wasn't a whole lot of room in there last year however C sat on the bed next to me. B sat at the foot of the bed. Mother had a chair next to the bed. We packed in like sardines yet it was really fun.
We even did the tree in my bedroom. The tree was in my bedroom because it was the room I was living in. There was so little space that the three of them kept making trips out to living room to carrying things out.
This year my mother's new friend is being added to the fun. This is a woman who hasn't had much in her life so I expect that this will be a surprising treat for her. I know she is fully involved because mother told me she needed my stocking.
I know C, B, mother, and I look forward to this as part of our traditional Christmas every year. It just wouldn't feel like Christmas without doing this. We do it in the afternoon and it feels like it extends the day for us.
I, even as a child, got much of my joy from watching others open their gifts. I am observer. I love to watch people's expressions. It can be very interesting just to watch expressions as they open a special bar of soap, a body butter, a small knick knack, just little things that show that someone has taken time to know what that person likes.
I may not have the bliss of child. I have learned though to not stress over Christmas and to enjoy the simple pleasures.
Blessings and Peace, Alesia

Hi Star!
Gorgeous pictures! I would the opportunity to swim in those waters. The rocky coastline, surprisingly, is reminiscent of Maine. Our waters are greener and sometimes gray. A good summer day they will be a dark blue however they are frequently green the other seasons. They are most often gray in the winter. Our skies are frequently gray in the winter.
Our days are still quite mild here. We do have snow on the ground again. Wednesday we lost our snow in 50+ F weather. Thursday we got about 5" of snow then torrents of rain. It is amazing that the snow didn't wash away in the rain.
We won't consider it colder until it is much colder. Our nights are getting frigid though.
Blessings and Peace, Alesia

So this year you can enjoy your Christmas season in your country. It is nice ! I have seen some decorations of Phlippine for Chrismas tree before and I found it is rather simple. I like them. They are made by natural stuff. Right ? I guess Santa in Philippine wear T- shirt and casual pant. He even try to do surfing. I am wondering what kind of books about Santa you read when you were small. Did they have some snow in the book ? Reindeers are in the book ? I guess each country has different style Santa. Thinking about this kind of things bring back my sprit to my childhood.
Have a nice day ! [masako]

Hi Star,
Well, sewing use to be a passion for me. I really enjoyed it. I think it helped me keep my sanity as a teenager and when I was married. I couldn't understand why I couldn't remember for years. I realize now that it was because I was under so much stress.
I never did any work on it during those 17 years. I just kept looking at to keep my desire to finish it alive. I started dreaming about sewing a few weeks back and realized that the memories of how to sew were coming back. I do have a streak of persistence in me. I don't like to give up on anything that I start.
My next goal is to learn to quilt. I will think about quilting, read about quilt, look at pictures, between now and when I can purchase the supplies for it. I think it helps to train the mind to wrap it around a new thing. It helps to build the desire to that new thing.
If you want to use my technique and I was going to take up cross stitch I would pick something I really wanted to do and keep it around me. I would look at and handle the supplies until the day that I picked it up and knew I was ready to do it.
I hope you can find joy in whatever you choose to do.

Hi Star! I love rocks! Always have! Very interesting formations.
If you are ever in Maine you will have to come have lobster with us. I hadn't had any in several years and really enjoyed it. I use to live less then a mile from the ocean and still had it seldom. We don't get it very often because the prices are usually atrocious. I haven't even had haddock for at least six months because it has been running between $10 and $12 a pound. My budget can't fit that into it. Lobster prices have been reasonable this past month. I paid under $6 a pound. B saw it at $3.99 a pound a couple days ago.

Ah I wish it was a rollercoaster but I've been told that I take so long to get to any point it that any sense of excitement is lost. Supermarket shopping trolley would probably be closer as it's slow, somewhat difficult but sometimes a few goodies are to be found. Mostly it's just impulse shopping and completely useless items selected at random because they look colourful and I like the taste :)
Where was I? oh yes, thank you :)

Ooooooh, I feel for you, Star! I don't like going to the dentist either! When I was growing up, there was never money for the dentist, so I never went. My first encounter with the dentist was when I was 21 years old, a college gradute, a nurse and my wisdom teeth were giving me fits. I just tried to suffer through it, until my roommate came home and took charge. She didn't ask, she just picked up the phone book and began calling until she found a dentist on call who would help me. That was my first dental encounter and although he was wonderful and kind, it was still traumatic! Hope your second visit goes well, and you leave with all your gums, tongue and lips intact! mmmmm, I kinda like going to the dentist... in a strange mix of fear and excitement that you get when queueing up for a rollercoaster ride. I must be strange! My dentist is a woman also, with a very gentle touch and a calming voice. It's the hygenist that makes me smile - she keeps asking lots of questions while she knows I have no chance of answering them... [Journey17]

Hi Star! I use to work for Dr. Dread as a dental assistant. Ah, her name was actually Dr. Bernier. It was a job I really did enjoy. Sometimes she had me sub for a couple of other dentists. I never once saw any one of them slip and hit soft tissue. I think it is one of those things like the saw they use to take off casts. It doesn't cut soft tissue. One of the dentists I occasionally subbed for was Dr. Slaughter and his nurse was Nurse Blood so they were Slaughter and Blood! Can you imagine?! What a name for a doctor/nurse team! My sister saw them when she was 5 for an emergency visit. I heard about them for years because of that visit. It was memorable enough that Slaughter and Blood remembered it too! My little sister was so nervous that my mother wrung her socks out during the appointment! They told me they had never seen one little girl perspire so much during an appointment out of fear. Ask for a bite block. The bite block holds your mouth open for you so you can relax more. They do try to squeeze an awful lot into your mouth. [MorningDove]

You make really good photos! those are pretty. I have been to Thailand many times in my college days. We went to Phuket but not to the city - we went for holiday at the beach for 2 weeks long. It was lovely and warm. I don't really like the city for it is crowded and really, really, really crowded. I have even weird stories to tell; but nót here. he, he, he ... So, what is your next destination for another holiday, dear? [Excomysteriez]

I have wondered if enough people seek after peace in their own hearts and their own lives, would it impact on the world around us all? I think it would. I can live without a lot of things in my life, but I cannot live without peace. Blessings to you, sweet friend. And may God grant you peace in your life, and peace around you in this world. I would sure like the opportunity just to see your country. I haven't ever had the chance to travel. I am very curious and the idea of visiting any country appeals to me. They say the third time is the charm so I am going to try again for the third time.
Do you know that if 8000 people around the world held peace in their minds and felt it in their hearts at the same time the effect of peace would be felt around the world? They have done experiments with smaller groups in cities. The effects have been reported by police departments and hospitals. If you want to know more listen to Gregg Braden's Science of Miracles CD. It is very powerful and very interesting.
Have fun with your pampering tomorrow.

Thinking about peace may not be a remedy for war, but it keeps your mind occupied while your dying from bullet wounds.

One heart full of joy is more than enough to put love in the right place. Thank you for your notes, my dear .... It seems this week everything so slow ... Especially that I noticed the usual MDD friends have not update since 2-3 weeks. Sad, really. Some perhaps will never appear again. But I, I cannot live without my journal because it is part of me and I want to write down things that happened in my life; it is simply weird not to write my diary and seeing it empty for too long as if someone died, you know. ha, ha, ha ... I wish you a happy day and hope to see more you here too! With love & warm hugs from here too!

What beautiful, beautiful pictures of Indonesia! What an incredible place; I would love to see it in person someday. And the military plane is so massive! I can't imagine how it felt to actually fly in that. But my favorites were the pictures of Foster. What a well mannered and beautiful dog he is. I hope he brings you much happiness and good memories while you are "dog-sitting" him. Take care, Star. Know that you are in my prayers. Love, Gina [Spirit Song]

Hi Star! I had truly never seen a beautiful coyote here. They always look sick and mangy. This one is truly different. A good sign I think of plenty of food and healthy conditions this year. We had an extremely challenging winter for the animals last year. We had 4' of snow on the ground almost all of the time from January to the beginning of April with at least 4" of thick ice beneath that. She must have found a place to shelter well and get food and water access to be so beautiful. Eeeeewwww...I agree with you about hyenas. Disgusting, violent animals. I have read that they can carry off a small child easily. Other canines don't usually attack humans without provocation or extreme hunger. Hyenas, in my understanding, will exploit any opportunity. I am still waiting on pictures. My sister says she needs to change her camera battery. [MorningDove]

How wonderful that you get to have Foster for company even for a short time. He sounds wonderful!
If you find out about the henna traditions there I would love to hear about it. I love learning about different cultural traditions.
We really did have fun. I have never been one for parties. I was much too serious even as a young person. My friends use to call me mother for a nickname even when I was a teenager. I am learning to be less serious and have more fun since I am not in constant pain. It is a real challenge to enjoy one's self when there is pain at all times. I like this much better.
Enjoy Foster's company to the fullest. I know you have missed having a dog around you. [MorningDove]

An Ode to Our Uniformed Brothers
|
Hi Star, I think soldiers, from whatever country, are not honored enough. The USA talks big. I don't think our soldiers are honored properly though. My father was a Navy man during the Vietnam War. He was never in Vietnam however he was involved in the Cuban Blockade in 1963. He died in 1970. Servicemen of that era were not honored here until years later in the 1980's. I know my father was awarded an expeditionary medal post-humously. The family was never contacted about it though. I am his oldest child. It has been like pulling teeth to even get information on the time he served. My father was never treated as shabbily as many soldiers.
I have seen many Vietnam soldiers homeless, even WWII veterans. I think any country who treats their soldiers this way should be ashamed. I find the current war extremely disturbing. I believe our leaders have made some extremely poor decisions and our men and women that are returning injured are having to fight for their medical care. It is shameful.
It must be painful at times to be so close and so touched by the deaths of so many at once. It is a good thing you are doing honouring them. Be gentle and kind to yourself.

I agree with you whole-heartedly! I would love the opportunity to explore a volcano. I have never been anywhere there is one. I have only been as far south as NC, north into New Brunswick, Canada, and west, as far as Buffalo, NY, and into West Virginia.
I remember escaping up a tree at 4 years old. I was tired of entertaining my 1-year-old sister. My mother thought I was stuck in the tree! She called some men to come get me down! They told her the tree wasn't big enough to hold either of them and she would just have to wait until I was ready to come down!
I was laughing at her inside because I knew I wasn't stuck. It wasn't the first time I had climbed it, just the first time she had seen me! Trees were my refuge. I climbed them to escape all through my teen years. I hated it when we had company because my parents would always embarrass me so I would climb this spruce tree beside the driveway. I could talk to people and they never knew where I was.
I was always in the woods too. There wasn't a place deep enough for me to swim in walking distance or I would have done that too. We spent most of the summer at a local spring-fed lake. It is a granite basin. We would get there at 8 or 9 in the morning and I would stay in every moment that I was allowed to. They always made me get out in the afternoon because I am so fair-complected. I burned easily. I escaped into books during those hours and was right back in the lake the moment they let me go.
The last time I climbed a tree was three years ago. I had a teenage girl with me. She didn't think she could do it so I showed her how and she followed me. I maybe 45 yet I still love an adventure. I couldn't climb a tree now because of my back if not for that I wouldn't be stopped though.
Sorry I haven't been by for a few days. It has been a challenge. I am healing though and have had a wonderful day today.
Have a wonderful weekend.

The Curtain of Invisibility
|
I agree it can be either. If anyone knows how to stay cool and conserve water in is the people who have survived in these dry desert countries. I know that if I had to live in a place like that I would want to be covered. I like that you found a positive way to look at it. Our Western culture teaches us that it is impolite to stare. Eastern thinking is different. I suspect there is a lot of curiosity involved in the staring. Some of it maybe rude, most probably isn't though. I like to give a person the benefit of positive thinking rather then assuming that their behavior is always negative. So you posted pictures here does that mean you have learned how to post your flowers? My sister took a gorgeous picture of a bunch of choke cherries yesterday. I absolutely love it. I think that sometimes a picture of a something up close like that can be more beautiful than an entire landscape. I look forward to seeing your flowers. Still no sun here. It rained heavy tonight and all the way home. I am still grateful for it. I was so uncomfortable with the heat and humidity. Alesia [MorningDove]

Cow's pee is even worse than carabao sweat!! Yuck! Where's my gatorade? But look, 'gator' 'ade'. For all we know, it's gator's pee too! or gator's saliva! Woah! Give me plain water, please! Afghan women wear long dresses (long sleeves and almost ankle-length) and long pants. Yup, all those clothes beneath the cloak! And the material is not even cotton. I don't know with you but I can't begin to imagine how it feels like underneath those layers of clothing in a daytime heat of 45 degrees Celcius or more! I'm not sure I am keen at finding out. Actually " Pokari " has no meaning ! But some say " It is cow's pee's sweat ! " Sounds terrible..It make me feel I don't want to drink any more.. haha But it is good to keep your condition good in the heat .[masako]

It is very interesting ! I want to try at least once in my life. Do you think Afghan women prefer to wear blue colored one ? Do they have another color one to wear ? I think it is a little bit stand out among people If they are in Japan or any other countries where people don't have that culture . Maybe in there you are stand out ! I have heard in Saudi Arabia even though you are from another contries you have to wear that kind of thing as long as you are woman .Under 40 years old women are not allowed to get in that country. Afghan is not so sever to compare to that ? I guess I can get used to wear it. It is also has a good effect like you said and probably at the end I would feel comfortable inside of it. No one actaully can see you.. It is funny . I am curious to know what kind of clothes they wear under the blue cloak ? [masako]

Yup, something seems wrong with that Paradox page. I actually tried posting it several times but with the same result. Oh well, another paradox, don't you think? |
